COMPENSATING VICTIMS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE MAY HELP TO MAKE END TO IMPUNITY IN KIVU

Compensating victims of sexual violence will encourage victims to report the attackers to police

There is no doubt that the perpetrators of sexual violence in Kivu remain unpunished if the government does not invest in creating conditions that encourage victims to report their attackers to police.

Having been abandoned completely in the hands of armed groups and militias for over 10 years, it is easy to understand why these victims of sexual violence in the Kivu provinces are very reluctant to seek help from the police. Unfortunately sometimes these victims were also gang-raped by some members of the same policy.

That is why RIK ask Parliament to the DRC for the urgent establishment of a compensation program for victims to encourage them to report these cowardly criminals for crimes against humanity to the police to seek justice and the assistance to rebuild their lives.
